Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC)

The IPPC Directive aims to achieve integrated prevention and control of pollution by laying down measures designed to prevent, or where that is not practical, to reduce emissions to air, land and water from specified activities, including measures concerning waste. The IPPC directive must be fully implemented in all member states by October, 2007.

Currently in the UK many sectors of business already have to comply, as do all new plants. IPPC is being introduced across Europe to improve the standard of environmental protection. Scotland currently has separate regulations (Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) Regulations), which includes waste avoidance/ minimisation, energy efficiency, accident avoidance, minimisation of noise etc.

Through a single permitting process, operators must apply “Best Available Techniques” and meet other requirements, taking account of local factors.

All installations, which are subject to the IPPC directive, must apply for a permit.
