Due to an administration error by the supplier, one of our large manufacturing clients was being billed for a water meter that had been removed when their business expanded into the premises adjacent to one of their factories.
As part of our ongoing contract with this client, Business Cost Consultants pursued a rebate on the client’s behalf. The rebate received stretched back more than two years and included not only costs for the water used, but also the surface water drainage charges. The total sum received from the supplier was in excess of £10,000.
As a result of their comprehensive utility audit for a large boarding school, Business Cost Consultants identified that the client was being overcharged for its water consumption. It was established that the client’s water system was fitted with incorrect parts. This had resulted in the client paying fixed charges that were almost seven times more than they should have been paying.
On the client’s behalf, Business Cost Consultants ensured that the correct parts were fitted and we pursued the water supplier for a refund. Following negotiations with the supplier, Business Cost Consultants secured a reduction in the charges and two rebates for a backdated refund totalling almost £5,700.

Before Business Cost Consultants was engaged, the SYT had several issues with how their water services had been installed and were being managed. Firstly, the utilities infrastructure which they had in place was very complex; they shared a water system with other tenants. They also found it difficult to make headway with their water supplier. Negotiations had become complex and protracted.
The first step taken by BCC was to negotiate with the supplier and arrange for the account to be put on hold. This alleviated much of the stress this issue was causing the client. The team used their expertise to trace the appropriate pipe-work, and to arrange for the installation of a water meter. That allowed the experts to clearly and accurately establish how much water the SYT was consuming. Using BCC to negotiate with the supplier on their behalf meant that staff at the SYT could keep their attention on their core business.
BCC arranged to have the new water meter adopted by the supplier. With accurate consumption data available, the team were able to take up the case with the supplier. Due to the complexity of the case, negotiations took about two years. During that time the team were able to keep the supplier’s credit controllers at bay. It was their contention that the client was due a large rebate and they should not have been chasing for payment.
The result was a reduction of about 50% on the ongoing charges for water services. In addition, BCC were able to negotiate a substantial rebate on previous charges. The client was delighted with the result and relieved that significant financial pressures were removed.
