James Fleming & Co. is part of the Surafti UK group and is a manufacturer of quality food products generally using sugar-based raw materials. Surafti UK consists of three companies, James Fleming near Edinburgh, WT Mather near Wigan, and Sugarfayre, near Newcastle. We manage all the utilities (gas, electricity, water, fixed and mobile telecoms) for all three of the UK companies.
Substantial gas cost savings
The client was using heavy fuel oil to produce steam for the processing of foodstuffs at their factory near Edinburgh. To reduce their costs, improve the availability of supplies and to reduce their carbon emissions, the client decided to replace the heavy fuel oil with mains gas and to convert the boilers. They initially shopped around to obtain prices to install the new gas supply and convert the boilers. They then gave us the best prices they had received about 12 months previously and asked us to beat them.
We agreed a specification for converting the two boilers and arranged for a free energy conservation survey that produced useful results. We then constructed a tender document, put the contract out to tender, vetted the tenders and presented the best deal to the client, who accepted our recommendations.
When the work was completed the client had more efficient boilers and was able to save money on fuel and boiler maintenance charges. In addition, the installation costs were reduced by £42,000 and the client continues to save thousands of pounds per annum on their running costs. They are also using less energy and have significantly reduced their carbon emissions. This helps protect our environment.
