Cinema chain reduces energy and water costs through effective utility management
Merlin Cinemas is an independent cinema chain with 11 cinemas mainly in Cornwall and Devon. From three employees at The Savoy in 1990 the team has grown well into the hundreds. With plans for further improvements to the existing sites and for more diversification and growth, Merlin Cinemas are committed to providing high quality entertainment for local people and visitors alike to their cinemas in Cornwall, Devon, Norfolk and Gloucestershire.
Business Cost Consultants (BCC) was engaged by Merlin Cinemas to carry out a full audit of utilities across each of their sites in order to identify areas for potential savings.
The team at BCC did a thorough audit of Merlin Cinemas historic electricity, water and gas bills to check for any discrepancies and ensure that their client was on the best possible rates. Following this audit BCC’s team performed a formal tender for energy contracts on behalf of the cinema to secure better tariffs.
BCC’s team also helped with the installation of new utility supplies at new sites. Despite there being no supply history, BCC’s team was able to construct forecast data to ensure that suppliers provided particularly competitive prices.
BCC’s team was successful in reducing the lead time for meter installation by at least two weeks, thus ensuring the new premises opened on time and taking the pressure off the staff at Merlin Cinemas.
BCC have also saved Merlin Cinemas over £40K by recovering overcharges on all utilities and reducing energy costs.
BCC continue to work with the cinema to check bills, resolve supplier issues, monitor energy and water consumption to ensure that costs are kept at a minimum and ensure that Merlin Cinemas staff are freed up to focus on other areas of the business.
“As a multi-site company with a deliberately small head office team, monitoring and checking all of our utilities has always been problematic. BCC have simplified the process by consolidating services and suppliers and in doing so have saved us considerable cost as well as reclaimed some overpayments we were unaware of. Having BCC look after this ever more important area of our expenditure is reassuring and very cost-effective.”
