Award winning bakery save over £22K on utility costs

Award Winning Maclean’s Highland Bakery, based in Forres, has been Scottish Master Bakers for four generations. The Maclean family manage three elements in their Bakery business – their traditional Craft Bakery, their retail shops and wholesale customers as well as their Biscuit production.

Situation:

Like most companies today, Maclean’s Highland Bakery were looking for a way to reduce overheads and so appointed Business Cost Consultants to carry out an audit of and manage all utilities (LPG, gas, electricity, water and telecoms) for five sites in order to identify areas for savings.

Strategy:

Business Cost Consultants team carried out a full review of all utilities and provided the client with a detailed report outlining areas in which savings could be made.

For instance, BCC organised the installation of smart meters to better monitor electricity consumption and aid the verification of bills. We also arranged an energy survey and interest free loans for Maclean’s Highland Bakery as well as providing advice for a structured energy conservation programme.

Our recommendations to replace most of the lighting with LED lamps and to instal mains gas were accepted. That included converting the gas boiler and gas ovens to mains gas. We secured soft loans for the work and managed both projects. Despite a number of technical and legal difficulties, we managed to see both projects through to successful conclusions.

In addition to identifying areas where savings could be made, Business Cost Consultants took over the management of all utilities, taking the administration burden off of Maclean’s employees, as well as ensuring that all invoices were accurate and any overcharges recouped.

Results:

BCC’s combination of expert management of utilities, combined with recommendations on monitoring and reducing consumption will save Maclean’s Bakery over 48% on their gas costs. We have also saved them over 27% on their electricity costs and 35% on their telecom costs. These savings don’t take into account the time and hassle saved by Maclean’s staff on managing utility supplies.

BCC’s team continue to work with Maclean’s to manage utilities and keep the client informed of ways to reduce energy costs and consumption.
