DC Thomson Group save at least £170,000 on energy
DC Thomson is a private company and one of the leading media organisations in the UK. It is headquartered in Dundee, Scotland, with a London base in the world-famous Fleet Street. The company publishes newspapers, magazines and books and has diversified into new media, digital technology, retail, radio and television through investment interests.
Business Cost Consultants, BCC, was assigned to manage energy services, as well as help reduce general office supplies costs.
Having come through a rigorous tender process, which included all the main energy brokers and consultants from across the UK, BCC were awarded the contract to manage the full DC Thomson energy portfolio.
Within the first few months of the relationship, BCC managed to negotiate annual savings of £170,000 on gas and electricity. This figure will continue to grow, and expected to reach the £400,000 mark in the near future, as BCC’s partnership with DC Thomson continues to grow. For example, in May 2016 we recovered £44,000 in electricity overcharges for our client.
BCC have also worked with DC Thomson to significantly reduce their staff time spent on energy services within their management and finance teams.
As well as gas and electricity, BCC has been proactive in helping to reduce costs in other areas of the business. One example of this is within office supplies. By utilizing their expertise in this market, BCC have been able to cut the total annual office expenditure by over 50%. This will increase as we investigate the current purchasing processes. We have also helped reduce telecom costs and are moving on to the look at the costs of water services throughout the group.
Quote from Donald Maclean, Managing Director of BCC
“We were delighted to win this contract against stiff UK competition in 2015. Since then we have been pleased to help the group become ESOS compliant, significantly reduce their energy and office supply costs and to provide much improved energy management services. We see many other opportunities to help the client reduce costs and will be using our extensive experience to maximise the savings.”
“Having had several poor experiences with energy consultants, DC Thomson appointed BCC as our energy advisors in June, 2015. Since then, they have helped us to deliver and implement a transfer of energy suppliers for our group without issue. This resulted in significant savings for the group.
BCC has also been proactive in highlighting further cost savings and service-improving initiatives over the past 9 months, which has really turned our energy program around. Strong partners such as BCC are hard to find and as such we are exploring many other avenues for growing our relationship”
