Energy Cost Reduction for Caledonia Housing Association

Caledonia Housing Association was formed in 2011 following the merger of Servite and Perthshire Housing Associations. With over 4,000 properties, they now operate throughout Dundee, Angus, Perthshire, Fife, West Dunbartonshire and in the Highland Council area. Caledonia is a progressive organisation and their achievements enabled them to win the prestigious ‘Housing Association of the Year’ category at the Scottish Home Awards.

The diverse portfolio of energy services includes over 300 supplies and an annual spend in the region of £830,000, Caledonia is implementing a programme to reduce energy costs, reduce carbon, invest in renewables and tackle fuel poverty.

Working closely in partnership with independent energy advisors BCC, a successful energy procurement strategy has been deployed despite rising wholesale markets. Through a combination of market tracking, advance purchasing, tariff structuring and open tendering, energy costs have been reduced by around £70,000 (8%).

Management of utility services and utility companies is outsourced to BCC. This ensures reliable and efficient control of costs, consumption, metering, invoice validation, contractual arrangements and invoice processing solutions. Refund recovery alone has saved around £32,000.

The cost savings from strategic procurement and outsourced management enables Caledonia to maintain lower service charges, invest in energy improvement programmes and deliver enhanced value for money for residents
