Scottish and Southern Energy gains more customers, promises increased profits

Friday, February 05, 2010

Scottish and Southern Energy's interim statement for the nine months to 31 December shows growth in customers and generation capacity.

With the 840MW Marchwood power station now in operation, SSE's electricity generation capacity tops 11,500MW with other generation projects progressing as planned, according to the company.

SSE said Greater Gabbard, its 500MW offshore wind joint venture with RWE npower renewables, is back on track for 2012 completion following initial problems with foundations. Commissioning of the onshore substation is underway and installation of the first turbines will commence "in the next few months".

Radar issues have also been resolved at the company's 350MW Clyde wind farm. The first phase should be complete in 2011, with phase two the following year. The Griffin wind farm, which SSE now fully owns, should also be completed in 2012.

SSE's Aldborough gas storage facility, a joint venture with Statoil, also remains on course for 2012 completion.

The firm says it is close to signing a contractor to unblock the tunnel currently keeping the 100MW Glendoe hydro electric scheme out of action, but repeated that Glendoe is unlikely to generate electricity until financial year 2011/12.

Regarding the controversial Beauly-Denny upgrade, the firm says it should take five years to complete the line.

In the UK, SSE's customer base increased 200,000 to 9.25 million. The company says year on year, customers are consuming around 5 per cent less gas and 4 per cent less electricity.

SSE says it remains on course to deliver a full year dividend of "at least 70p per share".
