THE Old Firm have signed a new star to make important saves - but it's not a new Artur Boruc or Stefan Klos, this signing will save money.

Both Rangers and Celtic have signed long-term deals with Bearsden business Audits Unlimited in a drive to improve energy conservation and meet environmental efficiency targets for their stadia, offices and training grounds.

The firm has a three-year deal to provide a utility management service covering electricity, gas and water.

The business, led by husband and wife team Donald and Linda Maclean, will monitor the clubs' bills and consumption data to make sure energy is used efficiently.

Technology such as data loggers will monitor and track gas, electricity and water consumption and flag up any problems.

It means that the Old Firm will have information to make the best decision on when and with whom to sign energy supply contracts.

Audits Unlimited will also administer all utility bills, investigating queries and resolve disputes as necessary on behalf of the clubs.

According to the latest study on the state of British business by KPMG, rising energy prices are taking their tolls on businesses across all sectors.

Donald Maclean, managing partner at Audits Unlimited said: "We are delighted to be working with two of the world's most famous football clubs.

"We've worked with a number of large stadia and have managed to make considerable savings on bills.

"Not only are Celtic and Rangers taking a prudent approach to costs they're also doing their bit for the environment."

Ross Macaskill, facilities manager for Rangers, said: "Audits Unlimited will help the club make sure utilities are being used in the most efficient and effective manner.

"We believe that Audits Unlimited will not only save us money but also help us be environmentally prudent by reducing CO2 emissions."

His opposite number at Celtic, David McCallum, said: "We are committed to meeting our environmental obligations and also increasing shareholder value by making cost savings wherever we can, and this will help us to do both.

"In addition, Audits Unlimited has already helped us to significantly reduce our water consumption.

"Even in rising markets, they have helped us reduce our utility costs.

"All of this ensures we get better value for money and reduce costs to the benefit of our fans and shareholders."
